Enjoying the game for 50 years

How it all began

It all started on February 1, 1974, with the opening of our first venue in Delmenhorst, then known as MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK. From day one, we set a high bar by combining a premium atmosphere and top-tier service with a team of expertly trained professionals and the most cutting-edge gaming machines—a strategy that paid off immediately.

Shortly after that first location in Delmenhorst launched, MERKUR CASINO quickly rose to become the dominant force in the German gaming market.

A brand with recognition value

At a time when most German gaming halls were plain and utilitarian, the early MERKUR-SPIELOTHEKEN stood out as true destinations. They offered a sophisticated experience, featuring elegant carpeting, modern suspended ceilings, and the latest in entertainment technology.

The interiors felt warm and inviting, characterized by brown sisal wall panels, light strips, and distinctive orange ceiling rings. On the outside, the brand was instantly recognizable by its three-colored stripes—details that today evoke a wonderful sense of nostalgia.

Political framework conditions

Over the years, the industry has been heavily influenced by changing political and legal landscapes, which continue to present MERKUR CASINO GmbH with significant operational challenges.

In the early 1980s, a debate erupted regarding whether multiple gaming venues should be allowed to operate side-by-side in commercial areas, as local authorities worried about an overconcentration of arcades in city centers.

By the end of the 80s, growth slowed significantly as new permits became rare. In response, and under the guidance of the Association of the German Amusement and Vending Machine Industry (VDAI), the industry introduced 'Automaten-Selbstkontrolle' (ASK) in 1981. This self-regulatory system included the introduction of age-rating stickers for games.

European success

After twelve successful years in Germany, MERKUR CASINO expanded globally in 1986, opening its first international center in Amsterdam. We exported the same winning formula: a blend of sophisticated design, cutting-edge hardware, and a commitment to guest service that still defines us today.

This international growth continued with the opening of new venues across Europe, including sites in Spain, the UK, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Serbia.

Employees & Service

Since the 1980s, we have viewed employee development as a priority. Starting in 1987, we implemented a standardized training program for all branch managers and their assistants.

Around that same time, we professionalized our look by introducing official lilac two-piece uniforms. Before this, the dress code was much simpler: just a white top paired with black trousers or a skirt.

Excellent service

Exceptional hospitality has always been part of our DNA. In the early days, the staff (who were mostly men at the time) served coffee in plastic cups; later, we transitioned to vending machines. Today, the experience is fully refined, with guests enjoying refreshments and snacks served in branded tableware featuring the iconic MERKUR sun.

Interestingly, while the serving of alcohol in gaming venues was first voluntarily restricted in 1985 and later banned by law, MERKUR-SPIELOTHEKEN had already made alcohol taboo from the start. We believed guests should enjoy their time with a clear mind.
