Throwback: Cult Arcades with Pinball & Billiards

A look back

We're inviting you to travel back in time with us. Picture a world of buzzing neon lights, the rhythmic clack of billiard balls, and the sharp chime of pinball machines—back then, arcades were the ultimate hubs for excitement, gaming, and hanging out. While the first home video games started appearing in the 70s, they couldn't hold a candle to the power and scale of arcade hardware. If you wanted the real, high-octane gaming experience, the arcade was the only place to be.

Pinball – The cult of the 70s and 80s

MERKUR History - Arcade - Pinball

Pinball machines were the true icons of this period. Throughout the 1970s, they were the centerpiece of every gaming hall. Players spent hours refining their flick and timing, all in pursuit of the legendary high score. Some machines were such magnets for crowds that people would gather in circles just to watch a master at work and hope to see a new record being shattered.

Racing Simulators: High-Speed Virtual Adventures

MERKUR History - Driving Simulator - After Burner

As we hit the 1980s, flight and driving simulators took the arcades by storm, introducing a whole new dimension of play. Equipped with tactile steering wheels, responsive pedals, and realistic cockpits, these machines made you feel like you were actually gripping the wheel of a race car or piloting a jet. From adrenaline-fueled street races to daring aerial stunts, these simulators offered a raw thrill that kept players hooked.

Billiards: The Calm Within the Storm

To balance out the noise and energy of the pinball and racing zones, we created quieter sanctuaries. Billiard tables were tucked away in their own dedicated areas, ensuring players had the peace and focus needed for a perfect shot.

Digital Tabletops: Classic Board Games Reimagined

Mann oh Mann

Beyond the flashing screens and skill games, our arcades featured digital adaptations of beloved board games like Monopoly and Mann, oh-Mann. These were played on oversized tables, allowing groups to sink into strategic battles for hours on end. It was all about friendly competition, laughter, and shared excitement.Monopoly and Mann, oh-Mann. On large tables, players could immerse themselves in the world of strategy for hours. These games invited people to compete, laugh, and share thrilling moments together.

Sporting Challenges

MERKUR History - Shooting Sports - Kimme & Korn

For those with a competitive streak and a steady hand, we offered a variety of sports-themed challenges. Whether you were honing your aim on the Kimme & Korn shooting range or facing off in a heated game of darts with friends, it was all about precision. These games weren't just for fun; they were a way to test your nerves and master your technique.Kimme & Korn machine or exciting darts duels in a lively group – skill and accuracy were what counted here. These games offered not only entertainment, but also the chance to compete with friends and perfect one’s own technique.

The Transformation of the arcades

This vibrant culture thrived until the 1990s, when the landscape began to shift. As home consoles became more powerful and popular, the crowds in arcades started to thin, and many of those classic machines faded away. However, the space evolved; where a few large machines once dominated, a new era of slot gaming began to take center stage. In 1977, we introduced our first in-house creation, the Merkur B. As the appetite for this new style of gaming grew, slot machines became a staple of the MERKUR Arcade experience.
