A legendary landmark: tracing the journey from the grand opening to the present day

Picture the summer of 1985. Perched high on the Syberg overlooking Dortmund, a stunning piece of architecture opened its doors to the public: Casino Hohensyburg.1985. High above Dortmund, on the Syberg, an architectural highlight opens its doors: Casino Hohensyburg.

At its launch, it wasn't just a venue; it was Germany's largest and most cutting-edge casino. Developed by Westspiel on behalf of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, it represented a pivotal moment in the evolution of German gaming and high-end entertainment.

The 1980s:

Grand opening and a glamorous start

With a massive investment of 72 million Deutschmarks, the result was a breathtaking 'temple of chance' crafted from glass and sandstone. The public response was immediate and overwhelming, with over half a million visitors climbing the Syberg within the first six months alone.

The launch was nothing short of a cinematic event. The legendary Gert “Goldfinger” Fröbe initiated the first spin of the roulette wheel, while the presence of global superstar Sammy Davis Jr. brought a genuine taste of Hollywood glamour to the heart of the Ruhr region. Uschi Glas also added her star power to the festivities. From day one, the message was clear: this was more than just a place to gamble—it was a destination for raw emotion, sophistication, and world-class entertainment.Gert “Goldfinger” Fröbe threw the first roulette ball, world star Sammy Davis Jr. brought a touch of Hollywood flair to the Ruhr area, and Uschi Glas was also part of the event. Even back then, the promise was clear: this is not just about gaming – this is where you experience emotions, glamour and entertainment.

The 1990s:

Rise to an entertainment hotspot

Right from the start, the casino offered far more than just the standard blackjack and roulette tables. With its lavish halls and a fleet of over 150 slot machines, it redefined the industry standard. By the 1990s, the introduction of 'Las Vegas World' effectively transported a slice of the Vegas Strip to the Ruhr area, complete with neon lights, bingo, wheels of fortune, the latest gaming tech, and live feeds of international horse racing.

Through these innovations, Hohensyburg established itself as the premier entertainment destination in Western Germany, blending gaming, high-profile events, and fine dining to attract a crowd that stretched far beyond the city of Dortmund.

The 2000s and 2010s:

Change & debates

Despite its enduring popularity, the casino became a focal point for political debate regarding the state's involvement in the gaming industry. Some argued that the government should not be operating the very businesses it was tasked with regulating. Combined with a broader push for privatization, debt reduction, and a drive for greater operational efficiency, the state government eventually decided to seek a private buyer.

Future and privatisation

In 2021, the decision was made:

The transition occurred when North Rhine-Westphalia sold the Westspiel Group, including the Hohensyburg location, to the MERKUR GROUP, shifting the casino from public ownership to private management.

The background: the state wanted to withdraw from the gambling business and place responsibility in experienced private-sector hands. The MERKUR GROUP took over – and has since invested in modernisation and new offerings.

Today:

40 years of gaming fun

Whether it's the tension of a poker tournament, the spin of a roulette wheel, the flash of modern slots, or a curated event, Hohensyburg has spent 40 years mastering the art of reinvention while staying true to its roots. What began as a government initiative has blossomed under the MERKUR GROUP into a dynamic entertainment hub—a living symbol of four decades of glamour, gaming, and countless unforgettable stories.
