The Risk Ladder

The risk ladder is one of the most popular features in our games. But how do you actually get to the risk ladder, and did you know that the risk ladder has been around for almost 50 years?

Challenge: Climb the gamble ladder!

It's more than just a feature; it's a core part of the multigamer experience and a highlight of MERKUR titles. It brings a unique blend of adrenaline and tension—though we'll admit, it's also caused a fair share of heartbreak for those who pushed their luck too far.

Whether you're a complete novice or a seasoned pro, we've put together a guide to the risk ladder. We'll cover the basics for beginners and share a few insider details that might even surprise the experts.

How to climb the risk ladder

To get started, you first need to land a win. Once you do, you'll see the risk buttons (for the ladder and cards) light up, signaling that you can enter the feature. Your starting position on the ladder depends on how much you won. From there, you attempt to climb higher by 'pressing up' using the dedicated button.

If you manage to reach the 14,000 mark, you unlock the exclusive 'risk ladder plus' mode.

Of course, there's a catch: if your attempt to climb to the next rung fails, you lose your progress and drop all the way back to zero, returning you to the main game.

Risk ladder plus

At the end of 2018, we gave the risk ladder a major upgrade. While 14,000 used to be the ceiling, the 'risk ladder plus' now allows you to aim for 30,000. The best part? Even if you fail a climb in this mode, you won't leave empty-handed, as you're guaranteed a minimum payout of 10,000 bits.

Please note that the risk ladder plus is a premium feature available only on MERKUR machines found in physical casinos or arcades.

The history of the risk ladder

The risk ladder first debuted back in the 1970s in the MERKUR Komet, one of the earliest machines created by the Gauselmann Group. By 1979, Paul Gauselmann had officially patented the concept.

While many others have tried to copy the formula, MERKUR has always stayed ahead of the curve. When the industry shifted from traditional reels and discs to modern multigamers, we were the first to successfully integrate the risk ladder into these new systems.

Did you know?

Interestingly, players used to talk about '140 machines'—this was the shorthand slang guests used to describe any machine that featured the risk ladder.
