It all began in 1976

Back in the mid-seventies, the Gauselmann company released its first gaming machine. While brainstorming a name, Werner Ganteföhr—a talented artist from East Westphalia and a close friend of founder Paul Gauselmann—noticed that it was the year of Mercury.

That discovery led to the name MERKUR. To go with it, they designed the smiling MERKUR Sun. Although it was initially called the 'MERKUR Star,' it has remained the defining symbol of the Group ever since. MERKUR B . Fittingly, the symbol of the smiling MERKUR Sun was also created – at first referred to as the MERKUR Star – which continues to characterise the Group to this day.

Father of the MERKUR Sun

The man behind the logo was the late artist Werner Ganteföhr. He famously recalled the process, saying they didn't want something mundane like a piglet or a chimney sweep, so they chose a star instead. He leaned into the childhood rhyme about drawing a moon face with dots and dashes to create something radiant—a story that is now forever tied to the brand's identity.

Werner Ganteföhr and Paul Gauselmann, the founder of the MERKUR GROUP, first crossed paths in the early 60s and maintained a deep bond until Werner's passing in 2013.

The MERKUR Sun rises

After debuting in 1976, the MERKUR Sun became a staple on every Gauselmann product. The logo gained massive visibility with the launch of the Merkur Spielotheken (now known as MERKUR Arcades). From the mid-seventies on, this sun popped up all over Germany, setting a new gold standard for quality in the growing arcade industry.
The radiant trademark drew particular attention with the founding of the then Merkur Spielotheken (today: MERKUR Arcades ): From the mid-seventies onwards, the MERKUR Sun rose in many places across Germany, setting a benchmark for quality standards in the still emerging arcade sector.
