Once upon a time ..
The tradition of sports betting is incredibly old. Historical accounts suggest that people have been wagering on athletic contests since ancient times, with the Olympic Games being a primary attraction—some traditions even trace this back to the 2nd millennium BC.
While they didn't have the massive variety of sports we see now, ancient competitors still competed in fundamental events like sprinting, jumping, throwing, and equestrian races.
King Football takes the stage
The birth of the first English football clubs in the mid-1800s naturally led to the creation of cup tournaments. This didn't just modernize the sport itself, but it also laid the groundwork for football betting.
The passion for football quickly swept across Europe. By the late 19th century, German clubs were forming and establishing their own leagues, creating the ideal environment for betting enthusiasts to thrive.
And then came the internet
Long before the digital age, people placed bets at physical locations—ranging from small kiosks outside stadiums to dedicated betting shops. However, the arrival of the internet is what truly opened the doors to a global audience of fans.
The mid-1990s saw the emergence of the first online platforms, allowing providers to reach far more customers. The World Wide Web removed the need to visit a shop or a stadium in person, making the process seamless. Additionally, the introduction of digital payment methods made funding wagers much faster and simpler.
