How does cricket work?

What matters?

At first glance, cricket might seem like a puzzle, but once you grasp the fundamentals, its charm becomes obvious. The game revolves around two teams, the scoring of runs, taking wickets, and the rhythm of overs. Here is a clear breakdown of the mechanics so you can follow the action like a pro.

How does cricket work?

Cricket is played between two teams of 11 players each on a large oval grass field. The heart of the action takes place on the 'pitch,' a rectangular strip in the center. The goal is simple: the batting side tries to accumulate as many runs as possible, while the bowling and fielding side works to stop them and get them out.
One team bats and tries to score runs (points).
The other team bowls and fields, aiming to prevent the batting team from scoring.

The sequence of play:

  • Two batters take the field together—one faces the bowler while the other stays at the opposite end to assist in scoring.
  • The bowler's job is to deliver the ball with precision toward the batter at the other end of the pitch.
  • The batter aims to hit the ball away and, together with their partner, sprint to the opposite end of the pitch. Every completed trip from one end to the other counts as one run.
  • While the batters are running, the fielders scramble to retrieve the ball and throw it back quickly to dismiss one of the batters.
  • An innings concludes once 10 of the 11 batters have been dismissed, at which point the teams swap roles.
  • The outcome is decided by the scoreboard: the team that managed to score the most runs takes the victory.

Quick Facts About the Cricket Pitch:

It measures 22 yards (20.12 meters) in length and 3.05 meters in width. At each end, you will find:
Width: 3.05 meters
At both ends:

  • 3 wooden stumps
  • The creases—white lines that mark critical boundaries for the players.

This is where all the action happens:

  • The bowler delivers from one end
  • The batter stands at the far end, ready to strike the ball.

Cricket rules

When is a batsman out?

  • When the bowler manages to hit the wicket (the three wooden stumps standing behind the batter).
  • When the ball is caught out of the air.
  • When a batter is caught out of their safe zone while attempting a run.
  • When the ball strikes the batter's leg in a way that it would have hit the stumps (known as LBW, or Leg Before Wicket).

Scoring system:

  • 1 run: Awarded when both batters successfully swap ends once.
  • 4 runs: Awarded when the ball hits the ground and then rolls or bounces across the boundary line.
  • 6 runs: Awarded when the ball is hit over the boundary without touching the turf.
