Tennis Rules

The basic principle of tennis is simple:

The sport takes place on a rectangular court divided by a net. Whether it's a singles match (one-on-one) or doubles (two-on-two), the objective is simple: hit the ball over the net into the opponent's territory so they can't legally return it.

To get you started, here are the fundamental rules of the game:

  • A player must return the ball after it has bounced no more than once on their side.
  • You earn a point whenever your opponent hits the ball out of bounds, fails to clear the net, or simply misses the shot.
  • Matches are structured into sets and games. To win a set, a player needs to secure a specific number of games; to win the entire match, they must secure the required number of sets (typically two or three).
  • Players take turns serving, and a rally continues back and forth until someone makes a mistake.

How Tennis Scoring Works

Tennis scoring is quite unique and rooted in deep tradition. Here is a simple breakdown of how it all works:

Game:

  • Within a single game, points progress from 15 to 30, then to 40, before a player finally wins the 'game'.
  • 0 points = “Love”
  • 1 point = 15
  • 2 points = 30
  • 3 points = 40
  • The next point after 40 wins the game.
  • If both competitors reach 40, the score is tied, which is known as a 'Deuce'.

Deuce:

  • Once a game reaches Deuce, a player needs to win two consecutive points to close out the game.
  • Winning the first point after a Deuce gives that player the 'Advantage'.
  • If the player with the Advantage wins the next point, the game is over.
  • However, if they lose that point, the score slides back to Deuce.

Set:

  • Generally, the first person to win six games—provided they are ahead by at least two—takes the set.
  • At 6–6, a tiebreak is often played.

Tiebreak:

  • In the event of a tiebreak, the scoring switches to a standard numerical count (1, 2, 3, and so on).
  • The winner of the tiebreak, and thus the set, is the first to reach 7 points with a minimum lead of two.

Match:

  • Most matches, including those in women's tennis and the majority of men's tournaments, are decided by a best-of-three sets format.
  • For men's Grand Slam events, the stakes are higher, and matches are played as best-of-five sets.

Why is it scored that way?

While the exact reason for this odd scoring system isn't set in stone, there are a few popular theories:

The French Theory: Some believe it stems from early French tennis, where points were tracked like a clock face in 15-minute increments (15, 30, 45). Over time, 45 was simplified to 40 before reaching the end of the game.French origin: Many believe the system comes from french Tennis. The points may have been based on a clock face: scores were counted in 15-minute intervals – 15, 30, 45 – with 45 later shortened to 40, followed by “game.”

The Betting Theory: Another suggestion is that the system evolved from early gambling habits, where bets were typically placed in 15-unit increments.Betting systems: Another theory is that the scoring developed from early betting practices, where wagers were placed in steps of 15.

Regardless of its origin, this system has remained intact over the years, becoming one of the most iconic and distinguishing elements of the sport.
